Phonics at Hightown Junior, Infant and Nursery School.

At Hightown we use the ‘Floppy’s Phonics’ systematic synthetic teaching programme. This step-by-step phonics programme introduces children to the sounds and letters (the alphabetic code) that are the foundations of all reading and writing.

To reinforce the teaching in school, your child will bring home their phonics home learning book every Friday. Included in this book will be:

  • two activity sheets to practise and reinforce the sounds that have been learnt in class during that week.

Once your child is familiar with the above routine, the book will also include:

  • space to practise letter formation and spelling
  • information of how to access the Extra Practise Zone online along with details of which online book to use to practise the week’s focus sounds
  • a copy of the alphabetic code for you and your child to refer to.

Children will also be sent home with a reading book and or a phonics keyring that is closely matched to the sounds that have been taught and phonic understanding. Children will bring home Floppy’s Phonics Fiction, Non-fiction and traditional tales to apply their phonic skills to different text types.

Please listen to your child read their reading book more than once to encourage confidence and fluency.
